Specialist unit conversions: prefixes and conventions

Avoid confusing charge with energy, US gallons with Imperial gallons, and dynamic viscosity with kinematic viscosity when converting technical units.

This guide explains a practical choice of inputs, a worked example and the assumptions behind the linked tools.

Prefixes are powers of ten

One microfarad is 1,000 nanofarads, while one picofarad is 0.000000000001 farads. The specialist converters preserve small nonzero values using scientific notation rather than silently displaying zero. Keep unrounded source values when a later calculation is sensitive to precision.

A matching-looking label may be a different quantity

Ampere-hours measure charge; watt-hours measure energy. Converting between them requires voltage information. Magnetic flux uses webers, whereas flux density uses teslas and needs an area relationship. Dynamic and kinematic viscosity require density to relate one to the other.

Name the convention explicitly

A US liquid gallon is 3.785411784 litres; an Imperial gallon is 4.54609 litres. A fluid-flow conversion must specify which gallon is intended. Textile tex and denier are direct mass-per-length systems, while indirect yarn counts require another relationship. Always read the unit labels and the converter assumptions.

1 µF to nF1,000 nF
1 pF to F1e−12 F
1 Ah to C3,600 C
9 denier to tex1 tex

Unit conversion alone does not establish component suitability, medical dose, equipment safety or local regulatory compliance.
